Could you not argue every language is Thematic? brainfuck could be argued to be themed around having a small interpreter. Forte could be argued to be themed around redefining numbers. You could realistically use any language as an example. -5anz (talk)
- you might be conflating a language's concept and theme. brainfuck isn't themed around having a small interpreter—that was its goal/concept, but is by no means necessary or even part of the language itself —aadenboy (talk|contribs) 15:39, 5 December 2025 (UTC)
- The themes used by these categories are generally visual themes / themes for how the program would look to someone who doesn't know the language. From that point of view, brainfuck's theme is "punctuation soup" but that isn't rare enough or intentional enough to really be featured (and brainfuck doesn't really lean into the theme, because, e.g., it allows comments that are written using normal English letters). Likewise, Forte's theme from this point of view is "looking like BASIC" but that's an existing programming language (it was intentionally designed to look like BASIC to make it easier for people who don't know the language to read the programs and therefore get the joke). So I guess one way to define this category would be "languages that are themed around things other than programming / programming languages". (That said, although I've mostly been talking about visual themes and these languages are mostly based on visual themes, they generally work better if the theme is tied into their semantics too (e.g. Homespring). But that isn't a requirement because most existing thematic languages don't bother with it.) --ais523 18:01, 5 December 2025 (UTC)
