The year of creation of a language is open to interpretation. For example:
- when somebody first dreamed up the idea of the language
- when somebody first got anything about it down onto paper, disk or some other medium
- when somebody started to write the language spec
- when the language has an implementable spec of the first version
- when any information on the language was first published
- when a complete language spec was first published
- when the first implementation was written
- when the first implementation was published
What do most people here take to be the year under which to file a language? -- Smjg 21:44, 16 Oct 2006 (UTC)
- To me the year of creation is the year the language is shown to the public the first time. That is posting the specs, if any, or otherwise placing some information about it somewhere, be it a mailing list or something else. --Keymaker 23:03, 16 Oct 2006 (UTC)
Still, there are many esolangs without year categories... --None1 (talk) 09:23, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
