03:26, 10 December 2025: Ytebbit (talk | contribs) triggered filter 9, performing the action "edit" on User talk:Ais523. Actions taken: Warn; Filter description: require new users to introduce themselves (examine)

Changes made in edit

Recently, I created Gemini, but because there was too much content (more than 50,000 bytes), I triggered the abuse filter, so I had to write this page in two parts. If possible, could you grant users some leeway (for example, changing the 50,000-byte limit to 65,536 bytes)?

:Very large pages aren't a good fit for this wiki. (Normally large specifications and data files would be hosted offsite.) In this case, the basic content of the page looks mostly OK, but it is written in an extremely redundant style (e.g. "in a try-with-resources expression, both the catch and finally blocks are optional," … "It should be noted that there is generally no need to include catch or finally blocks in a try-with-resources expression, and developers are not advised to manually release resources (as this would be redundant). However, if it is necessary to explicitly catch and handle exceptions that may be thrown during the try block or the acquisition and release of resources, catch and finally blocks can still be included in a try-with-resources expression."). I have a suspicion that it would have been possible to write the same page in a much shorter way (which would also make it easier to read), so the filter is being helpful here by flagging a potential problem with the page; as it is, the page is extremely hard to read because it takes so long to get to the point. --ais523 03:03, 7 December 2025 (UTC)

They were overloading the esolangs.org server with the requests, meaning that it was inaccessible for a while because the server was too busy with bot requests to handle the requests from humans. So I went and hid the old diffs of large pages so that the bots couldn't collapse the server via sending lots of requests for them (large pages can take a lot of server resources to diff). If the bots move onto other large pages, I will hide the diffs there, too. The changes were entirely made to help keep the site safe from bots and weren't in response to any action by the human users. A TCness proof would likely involve writing program fragments that do things like simulate counters or queues, and it seems like it could be difficult to get those right without an interpreter to check them. Will you not delete these categories when I add them to the Esolang:Categorization if I only add the ones with atleast three different creators that made the esolangs on there? Just asking so I don’t hurt your feelings and another Category like Category:Sus that was on there for a long time doesn’t get deleted because of it. Won’t ask again so I don’t annoy you. -Elijah “helpe” Hunt :It's not really about who created the esolangs, but about whether the category itself is well-designed. Designing a category properly is hard, and almost all attempts to create categories tend to have problems, which is why we've left the "no unapproved categories" rule in place. In particular, before creating the category, there's a need to work out a definition for which languages fit in it (often related to computer-science concepts), and whether it's better as a category or as a list or a set of "see also" links. The category description page is also often hard to write correctly – ideally it should link to an article about the topic, and should make it clear which languages are and aren't covered (even some of our existing long-standing categories, like :Category:Unimplemented, aren't up to this standard yet). :Additionally, this isn't really about my feelings – I do most of the admin actions on Esolang so I'm the most visible person in enforcing the Esolang:Policy, but the decisions are made by a much wider range of people (e.g. the categories rule was in place even before I first joined the wiki). That means that they also work better when they're categorising an objective property of a language. On the other hand, they shouldn't be things that apply to almost every language on the wiki, because then it would be more useful to have a list of exceptions. (:Category:Low-level was probably a mistake because of this, because in practice people make a lot more low-level esolangs than high-level ones.) :When only a few pages fit, linking them via "see also" is more useful because people who are interested in one language with the property in question might also be interested in others – a category wouldn't clue that very well, but a "see also" section does. When there's a medium number of pages, maintaining a list to individual languages in each others' "see also" lists becomes unwieldy, so it makes more sense to make a list page that can describe the languages in general, and link to that. This is part of the reason why there's such a high bar for making categories here: for most properties you would want to categorise, there are better ways to do it. --ais523 07:58, 22 June 2025 (UTC) == LifeViewer == Is it possible to add LifeViewer to this wiki? --ais523 03:03, 7 December 2025 (UTC)'

Finding articles on Esolang that need cleanup isn't exactly difficult, and the odds that a casual reader would help with a cleanup task are very low.) --ais523 22:17, 23 November 2025 (UTC) == Why do so many people delete lines from Introduce yourself? == I've seen that in many filter 9 hits ↑ (↑↑↑) 23:06, 23 November 2025 (UTC) == Bbtos talk page == The bbtos memorial languages talk page is filled with angry people just kinda screaming at each other, so maybe we should delete it?(there isnt much point in keeping it around anyway) --Yayimhere2(school) (talk) 10:34, 24 November 2025 (UTC) == Chess again == Maybe I should jump in so early, BUT, theyre doing chess again on dioxide in a polypropylene box/Four-player-chess. --ais523 03:03, 7 December 2025 (UTC) == anonymize user == Hi, could you anonymize the user User:Mker-bin and delete the page DTM?
