Panaklong (Filipino/Tagalog for "parenthesis") is an esoteric programming language by user:raiseafloppafan7741 on the first day of October 2026. It, the implementation, and this wiki page, was made in around 1.5 to 2.5 hours an hour before school.

Overview

In Panaklong, the program has an unsigned 16-bit accumulator initialized to zero and an initially empty deque of 16-bit unsigned integers. There are 6 commands and 4 "alternate-mode" commands which each correspond to a bracket, with normal mode being the default. The brackets MUST be paired but do not have to be matched, for example [(]) is valid but ([] is not. Non-brackets are ignored and if there is an unpaired bracket in the program, the interpreter must halt and print "you have an unbalanced bracket stupid".

Command Action Alternate action
< Enqueue the temporary register Toggle whether deque operations operate on the front or the back. By default, the deque operations operate on the front.
> Dequeue into the temporary register
( Increment the temporary register. Wrapping. Enqueue a byte of user input. EOF is 65535.
) Decrement the temporary register. Wrapping. Dequeue a number and output it as a byte modulo 256.
[ Same as in brainfuck, except with the temporary register. Out of time pressure and laziness, these were not assigned alternate meanings. This means that they are NOPs.
]
{ Toggle alternate mode.
}

If an operation tries to dequeue with an empty deque, the program simply halts.

Examples

One Time Cat

{()}

Infinite loop

([])

Cat program

This one never halts.
