The Matchbox Educable Noughts and Crosses Engine (aka Machine Educable Noughts and Crosses Engine or MENACE.)

It is often considered one of the first known types of artificial intelligence and was pioneered by Donald Michie a British Artificial Intelligence researcher who spent some time during World War 2 codebreaking German Lorenz ciphers.

Tic-tac-toe and Hexapawn

MENACE was developed ~15 years after WW2 and is considered (by Allies) to be the first known model of artifical intelligence (and is an esoteric mechanical computer made out of matchboxes containing different numbers of colored beads which represent board states)

Generally MENACE is capable of playing naughts and crosses (aka tic-tac-toe) and Hexapawn.

extrapolation to low-level languages

As demonstrated by mitxela's tic-tac-toe in brainfuck, MENACE can be emulated in low-level languages such as brainfuck.
