John Backus (1924–2007) was a computer scientist. His contributions to esoteric programming language theory include the Backus–Naur Form (BNF) metalanguage, the FP language, the concepts of languages in the functional paradigm and function-level programming, and contributions to COBOL and Fortran, two important predecessors of the well-known INTERCAL language.
