The Greeks already did this.

They used letters for digits, with different letters for 10's and 100's but no zero. If there was a chance of confusion a 'number symbol' (an acute accent in modern form) could be used to flag the number. From this you get little word/number game where you would add up the digits of a word (10s and 100s too) to get the number of a word. This is where the number of the beast comes from.
